Having just moved from what I believe was Mozilla 1.0 RC3 to 1.1alpha (Build ID 2002061103) all bookmarks have been lost, apparently permanently. I've noticed this happen in the past, but then it's always been a temporary glitch. This time it seems permanent. Several restarts of both versions of Mozilla now show no bookmarks saved at all. I was able to import an old version from over a year ago, but the majority of my saved bookmarks now appears lost for good.

Same for me, using Linux (Mozilla 1.1alpha, #2002061108). It doesn't always eat my bookmarks, though. It usually happens in connection with another bug (which I haven't found somewhere, or reported). After browsing several months of archive at www.doonesbury.com, the browser stops loading images, and starts outputing "Unable to create socket" on stdout. When restarting the browser, my bookmarks (and tool bar) are replaced with default ones. I'm not certain, but I think that this only happens if I added a bookmark during the session that later crashed. Mozilla 1.0 or earlier had neither of these problems

Additional information: Just lost all bookmark references again, with most recent start-up. This time, even the default personal toolbar did not show up. I even had an alert box appear indicating that "www.personaltoolbar.com" could not be found. Perhaps that's a clue toward solving the problem?
Quite the same for me. Every trace of what looks like a bookmark (including personnal toolbar) disapeared ! I was using mozilla in fullscreen mode, then suddenly, NT sevely crashed (blue screen). At next mozilla startup, no more bookmarks. Maybe it's time to chang ethis bug status ;-)

I run CVS nightly builds on Linux. A couple of times over the last few weeks my bookmark file has been "reset" to the default. I've tried creating a new profile but that hasn't helped. If Mozilla is detecting a corrupt bookmarks file, then it should tell the user and keep a backup before nuking the old one with the default, then a user can try and rescue by hand if s/he wants. Don't know when this bug first appears as it's not yet reproducable :/

It's probably unrelated but it has only happened to me when I've been using this page: http://www.seethru.co.uk/zine/south_coast/helicopter_game.htm for a little while. It has a java game in it and I have an old version of the jre (1.3.1_02) that I know other people have had problems with. I'll upgrade that and see if it helps...

Ok even using the latest stable JRE (1.4.0) that page (from comment 6) still /regularly/ removes my bookmarks if I play it for 5-10mins. Anyone got any ideas what is going on?

I too have lost my bookmarks using Mozilla 1.1a on Windows 2000. I also had the alert box about "www.personaltoolbar.com", though my personal toolbar did not get lost.

Seeing as we have people mentioning various platforms here, changing platform to all but we might all be having separate bugs ;)
OS: Mac System 8.6 → All

Ahem. The reason updating my JRE didn't stop the URL in comment 6 deleting my bookmarks is that it is a flash program not java, and it happens with other flash pages to e.g. http://www.transcience.com.au/pearl2.html (Using Flash 5r47). Sorry for the java related spam.

Now using Build ID 2002072203 on MacOS 8.6 Bookmarks just vanished again. I can't point to anything that was done on the last start-up. Mozilla.org is the start-up page and I was just looking at e-mail, no websurfing at all.

This has happened to me several times, running Redhat Linux 7.3 and the release version of Mozilla 1.1.

By the definitions on <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/bug_status.html#severity> and <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?format=guided>, crashing and dataloss bugs are of critical or possibly higher severity. Only changing open bugs to minimize unnecessary spam. Keywords to trigger this would be crash, topcrash, topcrash+, zt4newcrash, dataloss.

Is anyone still seeing this problem with Mozilla 1.3b or later?
