User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:66.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/66.0

Steps to reproduce:

I attempted to use filters to delete email in a non-inbox folder that was older than 7 days.

Actual results:

There was no option to automatically execute a filter on anything other than the Inbox.

Expected results:

A "move message from" field should exist in the Filters dialog box that allows the automatic execution of filters on non-Inbox folders. This would greatly improve Thunderbird's ability to act as a digital mailroom for my email by enabling me to manage automated reporting emails and keep my inbox clean overall.

That's an 11 year old bug for Thunderbird 2. The workaround mentioned is also buried in a config boolean. I find it completely inane to expect the user to dig that far into the Config Editor for this.

There's also the fact that this doesn't really meet my request. I want to be able to run filters on a per-folder basis. I want the ability to set filters only for specific folders. The workaround would run all filters on all folders. This means that filters that I intended to execute on the Inbox, for example, would execute on everything, creating even more of a mess.

My main reason for the request is the following. I have several folders set up for thing such as email newsletters, bug tracking messages (Bugzilla included), etc. I want the ability to set up a filter that will automatically delete messages from these folders that are older than one week. I can already set a filter for the date, but it's either on the Inbox (default behavior) or everything (the config flag). I want to be able to set the filter for those specific folders.

You don't need a filter to automatically delete messages from folders based on age - that is actually overkill. Plus probably also won't work unless you run the filter manually.

Have a look at retention within folder properties.

Retention is exactly what I was thinking about. This helps a lot.

That being said, the online docs on this are sporadic at best. Has anyone ever written any how-to books for Thunderbird that would have this better featured?
