search field characters intermittently repeat a lot

When I use the search function via ctrl-f and type the search term, usually I have no problem, but sometimes I get long repetitions of one character, like these real examples:
typed "extension" became "exxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxtension"
typed "peach" became "peachhhhhhhhhhh"
typed "general data" became "general dddddddddddddddddddddddddddddata"
typed "gdpr" became "gdddddddddddddddddddpr"
typed "external links" became "external lllllllllllllllllllllinks"
The number of repetitions varies. No other character in the term repeats (I may type a double-character intentionally but that's not a problem). I don't get this in the address bar or in other applications. This has been happening in several recent versions of Firefox and I don't remember when it began. I didn't complain before because at first I thought it was a random glitch (it's too persistent for that) and then I couldn't tell if it was an OS problem, but, afer several recent updates to the Linux kernel, I doubt the OS is causing this. I doubt a keyboard disability setting is causing this in FF search but not in the FF address bar or non-FF contexts. The above were copied from the search field, so the numbers of repetitions are accurate.
It's not critical. I can ctrl-a (select all), delete the search string, and retype without a problem. It does not happen consecutively in a session. Even retyping all the above did not repeat the problem, so the specific strings themselves are not causing it. But it's annoying and wouldn't look good to other users.
