User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:66.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/66.0

Steps to reproduce:

I can recreate the problem by clicking on the bookmarks tab. It never fails. However, it seems to happen in other instances which I haven't determined. This has been going on since 4/5/19 when a new release weas instllaed.

My machine is a Thinkpad and I have Windows 7. Ihave deleted Firefox and reinstalled it and refreshed it and run it in Safemode. Problem still occurs. I have not created a new profile. Not sure whether to create new and make it the new default or edit the current default. Have also tried deleting the parent control file and also the latest bookmark backup file. The latter hung Firefox when I tried to open it. Retrieved it from the Recycle bin and then was able to open and start Firefox. Have also used task manager. This shows firefox.exe not running but still showing several instances in Processes. Tried stopping these but not able to do this. I have admin rights.

Actual results:

Firefox gives the message on top "not responding". I try to close using X. Dialogue tells me that it is "not responding" Do I want to wait or close. I close. When I restart the browser I get the msg " Firefox is still running", etc.

Expected results:

Firefox should have shown me a list of my bookmarks.

I have spent hours and hours trying to fix the problem. It has become a very big problem for me. It actually seems to be worse as the days go by. Please help.

Hello Carol - Can you please provide a different crash ID from about:crashes in the URL bar? The one you pasted there unfortunately is not found in our crash-stats system.

Do you have any anti-virus programs installed?

Flags: needinfo?(mcleod6)

Yes I do have Norton Security. However, I noticed on one of the updates (probably an Adobe product) I did see that McAfee Security was also downloaded and installed. I was annoyed since I hadn't requested it so I uninstalled it. However I still see traces of it in the roaming folder.
thanks for helping.

btw - I could not submit the .dmp file because it was emplty. Will recreate the problem and see what I get.

Hi, I tried to reproduce this issue on a Desktop Windows 7 with Firefox 66.0.3 but without any success, I'm not sure what the correct component for it is but after looking through the Crash Report I think the component for this issue is Core - Memory Allocator, In case it's not correct, please change the component to a better suited one if needed. Thank you.

Component: Untriaged → Memory Allocator

Please can you try updating to 66.0.5 which we've just released. It is unlikely to fix your issue, but lets try it anyway, since that is simple.

If that doesn't work, please locate your profile folder, shutdown Firefox, and create a copy of the places.sqlite file.

Then, restart Firefox, and go to Help -> Troubleshooting information.

Near the bottom of the page, you'll find "Places Database". Please click the verify integrity button. It may take a few seconds to run. Once it has run, please can you copy and paste the output it adds here.

Thanks for looking into this Mark. Firefox was automatically updated on my machine on May 9th. I don't see any improvement with the problem I am having.
I did recreate the problem by clicking on the bookmarks tab and got a (not responding) result. I did nothing and let it stay that way and when I went back there was a message as follows...

"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete."
"Script: chrome://browser/content/places/browserPlacesViews.js:130"

I clicked continue and it took me back to the webpage I was on in Firefox.

Next I followed your instructions and found the places.sqlit file. I exit FF and then did a control C to copy the file. When I tried to copy it to another folder, I got a wierd message from the copy function..............

"Unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error codes to search for help with this problem."
"Error 0x80070079, The semaphore timeout period has expired."

I could never find the Places Database as you suggested. I think this may have something to do with the problems I'm having.

Finally, I decided to create a new profile so I found the Profile Wizard by going to "fire.fox -p" and created a new profile. I am currently using that profile and so far, so good. I did not delete the old profile.

Also, btw, during this time last evening, 2 crash reports were sent to Firefox. In the first one I added a comment about this bug and the bug ID.

One more comment. I was able to locate the Verify Places file. Using the default profile the function took a long time to activate but when it did I got the following text.

Task: checkIntegrity

  • Unable to check places.sqlite integrity: Error: Error(s) encountered during statement execution:

Task: invalidateCaches

  • The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Hi Carol, thank you for the information. It appears that there's some strange corruption, or a file system issue that is preventing the places.sqlite file being read.

Would you be prepared to share the places.sqlite file with myself and my colleague? It contains only your bookmarks and history. We would only use it for seeing if we could find out what the issue is (and potentially a fix), and we would remove it from our systems after the investigation.

If you are happy to, please could you upload it to Firefox Send, and then send myself a direct link via my email - standard8 at mozilla dot com. Firefox Send encrypts the file on your computer and only someone with the link can decrypt it - additionally, you can make it so that only one person can download it before it is removed from the Firefox Send systems.

If you do not wish to, that is fine as well.

Hi Mark, I tried sending the file but I get an error every time I try to upload the file. I get to 3% loading and then the error. I renamed the file by adding .old1 as an extension and then tried to copy that file. That didn't work either.

:mak, could you have a look please?

I've just sent an email to Carol outside of bugzilla, stating that this seems to be a corruption at the operating system level - the operating system cannot read the file.

Therefore the best thing to do is to try running tools to check the integrity of the disc and the hard drive and see if that reveals anything.

As this is looks to be a file system issue, I'm closing this as invalid, as there isn't anything we can do here. Unfortunately we don't know why it was so badly corrupted, and it was unlikely to be Firefox at fault.
