Steps to reproduce:

Collected bookmarks over multiple years

Actual results:

Firefox got progressively slower. Modifying bookmarks in any way (create, update, delete) is absolutely, painstakingly slow.

Expected results:

Speed should've stayed the same.

I'm sure I could generate an example profile or bookmark db if required to recreate the problem.

Yep, the integrity check fixed it. Everything is snappy again.

I don't believe that's an acceptable solution though. The integrity check shouldn't be something ran manually, imho.

The integrity check does typically run once a day when the system is idle, but that will depend on Firefox's usage etc. From the preferences listed, I see you have places.database.lastMaintenance: 1556028553 for which the value there indicates that it was last run on Tuesday (23rd).

The database size went down a stage:

+ Initial database size is 10240KiB
+ The database has been vacuumed
+ Final database size is 5120KiB

I suspect it was just on the limit and dropped down. However, mine is 76800KiB and I don't really think that the size would directly taffect things here.

14083 is quite a large amount of bookmarks. We are a little slower in some areas than we used to be, however, if you're only generally dealing with updating a single bookmark or moving a few of them, you shouldn't notice any difference.

It'll be interesting to know if the performance says at the now good level, even after a Firefox restart.

In the meantime, Marco, do you have any ideas for anything I might have missed that might have affected the performance here?

It actually runs once a week.

This should not be a problem, the database grows in chunks, to avoid having to grow the file multiple times. It's likely vacuuming has just removed that unused additional space. It should have no influence on performance, afaict.

That's indeed a large amount of bookmarks, maybe it's not just bookmarks collected over years, but result of some add-on. I see a few bookmark related add-ons. I suspect Auto-Sort Bookmarks may be related to slowdowns if it listens to every bookmark change, thus I'd maybe try to disable that next time and see if things improve.

Unfortunately without further information there's not enough to go on to do any fixes. We are generally trying to improve the performance when handling lots of bookmarks.

If this does happen again, please could you get some estimates of timings for operations, e.g. how long single bookmarks vs multiple bookmarks take, and take a copy of places.sqlite from your profile before running the verification. With that information we might be able debug what's happening here.

For now, I'll close this as incomplete.
