moving mail to other folders

Details
I have been moving mail (in Netscape) to a very large set of folders, keyed by
the name of the sender, for years. I have 26 directories labelled A-Z, and in
each directory a Mail file named for each person that I've got mail from. In
Netscape, I just replace the Mail dir inside ~/nsmail to point to my own
directory. Then when I use the Message/Move Message option in NS Mail, I get a
list of all these directories (A-Z), and I can mouse over and each of those will
be expanded into a list with all the names I have folders for, and then I can
move/copy a message into any of those.
There doesn't seem to be any way to do this in Mozilla Mail. I tried
importing one of those folders, but the Import feature just goes to NS Mail's
inbox automatically - there's no way to choose. Ideally this feature would work
just like NS Mail (or better). As far as I can tell, there is no "move message"
feature that will allow me to create lots of folders and store my messages.

you can copy all those Mail files into your local folders directory and you
should get them all listed as folders under local folders.

I tried this - copied the directory labeled "A" into "Local Folders under
/home/salzberg/.mozilla/salzberg/wtvuus33.slt/Mail
Then when I open Mail, it does indeed show all the folders within the A directory.
However, I cannot read the messages in them with the Mail viewer (which I can
live with, and more important, I can't move or copy messages into them.
I tried using the "Message/Move" menu choice and "Message/Copy", and it
shows me the folders as submenus (good), but when I moved a message, it
didn't go in there.
Then I tried dragging the message from the header/summary windown into the
folder shown along the left (in the window area that shows all the folders).
This time, it deleted the message from teh header/summary area (so it's not
in my inbox), but when I looked in the folder that I'd put it in, it
wasn't there! So it is apparently just gone.
I'd be much obliged if you have any other suggestions. Thanks.
Steven

Don't copy directory 'A' but the contents of 'A' that is all the mail files to
/home/salzberg/.mozilla/salzberg/wtvuus33.slt/Mail/Local Folders. See if
that helps.
But how were these mail files generated, looks like 4.x, so did you not make use
of migration. When you start mozilla 1.0 it should show the 4.x profile with green
arrow. If you select that 4.x profile it will do all the migration for you.
