tested using 2002.06.27.05 chimera bits. 1. launch chimera, and open the Sidebar (click toolbar button or cmd+B). 2. quit and restart chimera. results: the Sidebar is closed upon restart. i'm not sure what the ui guidelines would be here, but should we persist the Sidebar state btwn sessions?

what does omniweb do? is this really a polish issue for preview?
OmniWeb 4.1 doesn't persist drawer state between launches. However, Apple Mail does. I'd have to say I'd go with storing the state. Not storing it would be like setting up tool palettes in Photoshop or Office and having to redo them after every launch (though on a much smaller scale, naturally).

i don't think we want to do this at all. it would mean that when you have one window open with the sidebar, opening another window will also have the sidebar open. why don't we wait for some feedback. nobody has yet complained about this.

Drawer state is definitely supposed to be window specific. Persistency is in the eye of the beholder er, implementation. I think mail.app _has_ to keep it open otherwise most folks would never realize they have multiple mail folders. Nominating for WONTFIX.

Before finally marking this WONTFIX, how about this: Persist the open/closed state of the sidebar for the last window closed. In the nexte session, use this state for the first window. Thereafter, make every new window with a closed sidebar. Thoughts?

Correcting summary because on Mac OS X it's a drawer damnit :-) I could live with persisting the last closed window's state but won't that confuse people that wonder why only the first window they open gets a visible drawer? And by next session do you mean the next time they open a window after closing one or the next time they run Chimera?
Summary: Sidebar state (opened) does not persist btwn sessions → Drawer state (opened) does not persist btwn sessions

i think it will be confusing to do the behavior sfraser described. people will never really know the pattern as to when the drawer will be open and when not. it will appear random and buggy, even if we know it's not. WONTFIX.
