154963 - Mozilla hangs sending mail if SMTP server (smtpauth.earthlink.net) doesn't respond to Use SSL "When available"

For 36 hours now whenever I try to send e-mail, Mozilla hangs connecting to my
SMTP server; its progress window appears and never goes away.  I can't cancel
and I can't manipulate other Mozilla windows and all open windows stop
redrawing.  The only way to release Mozilla is to End Task from the Task Manager.

My Outgoing Server (SMTP) is smtpauth.earthlink.net.  I can't ping this machine
right now, but Mozilla should be able to handle a failing SMTP server more
gracefully.



Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.  Set your SMTP server to a machine that doesn't respond.
2.  Try to send some e-mail.

I can't reproduce the bug without losing this bug report, I'll update if I learn
more.

Actual Results:  Get a progress dialog, but it never completes and Mozilla hang.
 I'm never prompted for my password

Expected Results:  Mozilla should eventually time out.

I figured this out with Earthlink support.
In Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings > Outgoing Sergver (SMTP), I had chosen
Use secure connection (SSL) "When available".
That had been working fine, but then for weeks would hang Mozilla per my bug
report.  Earthlink support suggested I change to Use secure connection (SSL)
"Never", and I can deliver e-mail.  So it should be easy to reproduce this bug:

Get an earthlink account.
Set Server Name to smtpauth.earthlink.net
Use name and password checked
User Name: [e-mail]
Use secure connection (SSL): If you set this to "When available", you should see
the hang.

Reporter - I am following your steps exactly, but cannot reproduce the hang. I
get the error message:

Could not connect to mail server smtpauth.earthlink.net; the connection was refused.

Are you still seeing this?
