1550719 - Cannot update official Beta/Nightly builds with Fennec-ESR builds

Devices:

• Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 (Android 8.0);
• Samsung Galaxy S8 (Android 9);
• OnePlus Two (Android 6.0.1);
• Xiaomi MiPad 2 (Android 5.0.1) - x86-64 architecture;
• Lenovo Yoga Tablet (Android 4.4.2) - x86 architecture.

Fennec-ESR builds:

• Nightly 68.0a1;
• Beta 68.0b1;

Steps to reproduce:

1. Try replacing official Beta/Nightly builds with Fennec-ESR builds.

Expected result:
Builds should be updated.

Actual result:
[INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE: Package org.mozilla.firefox_beta signatures do not match previously installed version; ignoring!] message is displayed.

Notes:
Please see attached screenshot.
The user can install Fennec-ESR builds if all other Fennec official builds are uninstalled prior.

FTR, I linked to the signed en-US APKs from the Ns jobs on Johan's last Try push. Maybe that was the wrong one?

Things to check:

• aapt dump badging $APK
• sharedUserId
• signature fingerprint

Ah, this error is unfortunately expected. The Ns jobs on the try push don't sign the APKs with the production key. We don't want anybody using Try to sign APKs with the real key. That said, I can make a beta signed with the key on Try, which would allow updates to be tested. What do you think :miralobontiu?

Sure, I will test the beta with the key on Try, and see if I can update the app.

Hey! Sorry I haven't updated that bug. Bug 1548864 landed, which means builds with the right (aka production) signature are now available at:

• https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/nightly/latest-mozilla-beta-android-aarch64/
• https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/nightly/latest-mozilla-beta-android-api-16/
• https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/nightly/latest-mozilla-beta-android-x86/
• https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/nightly/latest-mozilla-beta-android-x86_64/

We confirm that the update works following the steps:

• install Nightly from 05/17
• download from archive.mozilla.org Nightly - 05/24
• install Nightly from 05/24 -> the date is changed to 05/24.

We filed bug 1554211 for the date.
