Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:66.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/66.0

Steps to reproduce:

After a failed download, I opened the download menu and hereby dismissed the failed download symbol.

Actual results:

For subsequent successful downloads the button still always showed the failed download symbol.

Expected results:

This is confusing since the new downloads indeed were performed correctly and the symbol should not have been shown again.

OS: Unspecified → Linux
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64

I tried to reproduce this but couldn't. Here are the steps I followed:

  1. open firefox
  2. try to download something large that would take a while
  3. disconnect the internet connection to break the download, wait for the yellow badge to show on the downloads panel
  4. reconnect the internet
  5. open the downloads panel, clearing the yellow badge
  6. close the downloads panel
  7. download another file

Then when the file downloads, the downloads button icon goes blue and "pops", but there is no yellow badge.

I guess your steps are somehow slightly different? Or perhaps this is fixed on current stable versions? Or it only happens with certain downloads?

Whoops, that last comment was not fully done.

What I wanted to say is, that I don't think the bug is actually caused by what the original description stated, at least I could not reproduce that either anymore. I however do experience the failed download button regularly. One way I found that always causes it, is in the new descripiton:

  1. Start a non-resumable download, (e.g. this test file, I found by a public search https://rapidgator.net/file/a912ef168bdb7ec419f3a7a2718b1062/Test_Session.avi.html)

  2. interrupt the internet connection, e.g. by going into standby

  3. dismiss the failed download notification symbol

  4. interrupt the connection again

  5. notice the symbol for a failed download shows up again

Sorry, is (4) really meant to be "interrupt the connection again"? Are there steps missing where you restore the internet connection and re-start a download?

Flags: needinfo?(pe44)

Well yes, interrupt means turning the internet connection off and on, sorry if that wasn't clear. During each (attempted) download, a working internet connection is available.

Was the download restarted between 3 and 4?

Ah, still not quiet getting the hang of bugzilla.
From what I have noticed, Firefox automatically restarts the downloads. This is done for resumable as well as non-resumable downloads.

Sorry, we're struggling to follow the steps now. You download once, the connection is broken once, then you restore the connection, which triggers downloading again, and you clear the symbol (before/after the download completes?). And then for another download (or the same?) the "failed" icon shows again, when the connection is interrupted again for that download? Or it shows during the same download?

Perhaps a screencast would help...

I am going to request triaging of this bug, since:
-you could not reproduce it
-it only ever occured with non-resumable downloads which themselves already are rare
-it is a very minor annoyance at best
-I don't want to use anymore of your resources on this.
Thank you for trying still and keep on doing good :)

OK, closing per comment #12 - I hope I understood that correctly...
