Chrome, Focus, and Opera are not complying with the Play Store's new icon size requirements yet, so their icons are conveniently larger than Fennec's and Samsung Internet's icons.

This is not a Fennec bug. Google's latest Play Store icon specifications specify that icons should be 512px with logos not exceeding 384px. The Firefox and Samsung Internet icons follow the new guidelines: their logos are 384px within a 512px icon. The Chrome, Focus, and Opera icons do not follow the new guidelines. For whatever reason, the Browser Choice screen was designed so the new 512px icons are smaller than the old icons. That shrinks the 384px logo even smaller.

This screenshot shows the 512px icon size in green boxes and the old icon size in magenta boxes:

I've reached out to folks at Google about this and will report back.

Hello Peter - Did you hear back from Google? Thanks.

Flags: needinfo?(stpeter)

Our Google contact told us that their new icon standard resulted in our icon decreasing in size compared to its prior format. Until they can fix the issue, they will revert our icon to the last approved "original specification" icon. No action is required at this time, but let's leave the bug open while we verify.

Were we able to verify Google's reversion to our old (correctly sized) icon?

Tentatively marking this bug as fixed in Fennec ESR 68 so it will show up in QA's list of bugs to verify.

Hello, this is what we have for now about this problem.
Device:

  • Xiaomi Mi 8Lite (Android 9);

I have verified the issue in the Play Store using 2 new google play accounts and the issue no longer occurs. According to comment 3 this is not a Fennec bug therefore I will mark it as verified for all Fennec versions.
