Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:67.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/67.0

Steps to reproduce:

I clicked on Thunderdbird's menu: Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions -> Lightning (double click there) -> Homepage (of lightning) which opens this page: https://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar

Then on that page, I click "get support" (to see the documentation) -> Creating new calendars

Actual results:

I see this:

"Creating a new calendar

Right-click in the calendar list on the left side of the screen.
Choose New Calendar… from the dropdown menu. "

And I'm like "what on earth?? The left side of the screen (of thunderbird) has absolutely nothing to do with Lightning/calendars, and even if I right click on the RIGHT side of the screen (where lightning shows its calendar in Thunderbird) I somehow see absolutely nothing happeniong...?

Expected results:

I should see useful instructions somewhere, especially since I'm paying a monthly contribution to Mozilla for some reason... right?

Walter, the reporter apparently means https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/creating-new-calendars is not accurate. Can you take a look and revise it?

Reporter, you are also welcome to make corrections and improvements by editting the article - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/creating-new-calendars/edit

Reporter, do you have the Calendar tab enabled? That is where you see the Calendar list on the left side.

Use Events and Tasks > Calendar from the Menu bar or App menu or the key combo Ctrl+Shift+C.

If you don't see the list.
Select the calendar tab.
Select View > Calendar > Calendar Pane and enable Calendar List.

This might help. Lightning User Interface

Wayne,

It appears the reporter abandoned this bug report.

Since the Lightning User Interface support link is on the Calendar Support I don't think it needs to be added to the Creating New Calendars page.

Thoughts?

I'm sorry, I was overly busy and confused these days. I (the reporter) will respond tonight (European time)

Thank you walts48 for the instructions. They worked (I had no idea before that there was a calendar screen and tab).

I guess the only "bug" that exists is really in the documentation, as Wayne and I pointed out before, which can be confusing to a newcomer like me.

If what I say is correct, I think it would be good if the documentation were fixed (though that's only my opinion).

Thanks so much.

There's also this little "switcher" icon at the top right of Thunderbird, which will immediately open the calendar tab (next to the "Tasks" switcher icon).

Your welcome.

So, you would put a link to the Lightning User Interface support article at the top of the Table of Contents in the Creating New Calendars support article?

I would modify the text of the "Creating New Calendars" support article, to make sure the user knows they need to be in the "Lightning Tab" before they start following the instructions in that page (i.e. in the "Creating New Calendars" page). That's because the "Creating New Calendars" page is reachable directly from search engines, when people search for ways to create/add/link calendars to their Thunderbird client. And they (as happened to me just then) might now there is a Lightning Tab they can (and should) go to.

I would insert a step 1. before the existing step 1. ("Right-click in the calendar list on the left..."), which would say something like "Be at the lightning tab" (where lightning tab could be a link pointing to a page describing the ways one can go to the lightning tab), or maybe just modify step 1 to say "From the lightning tab, right-click in the calendar list...". I don't know what is best, but something like that would be very helpful to me. Thanks!

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/creating-new-calendars/revision/184472 adds "From the Calendar Tab (not the sidebar):"
