Details

We've had several emails come in through the Compliance Box where users are complaining about the Privacy Notice repeatedly popping up while they're using Firefox.

We've had one user confirm that a new window pops up next to the window that's currently open every time they open a new window and every time they press the home button on the main Google page. They're using Firefox version 67.0.1 (32 bit) which appears to be up to date.

Can we get a little more detail (perhaps some of the original feedback you received?) Is this about the browser opening new tabs with the URL https://www.mozilla.org/privacy/firefox/ ? Or something else?

Hi Andrew - The above referenced user keeps seeing this page (https://www.mozilla.org/it/privacy/) popping up. It's the Italian version of our Mozilla privacy policy. We've gotten complaints from users who are probably seeing popups of the English version, but I'm still information gathering from those reports.

Hi Andrew - I'd like to refer these issues to Engineering for followup. I need to ask the users for consent for us to contact them - who do you want me to assign the bugs to? Do you want me to submit separate bugs for each report of this issue? Or add on to this bug?

Lily, you don't need to assign bugs to anybody, as long as you file bugs without a priority set, somebody from engineering will triage incoming bugs to get an appropriate component assigned, and ultimately get a priority assigned within that component. However, we often need to get additional information from bug reporters to make progress so getting their consent to communicate on bugzilla would definitely be helpful.

As for whether to file new bugs, we want to have separate bugs for separate underlying issues, but its not always clear when something is reported if it is a new issue or another instance of an existing issue. Feel free to file new bugs if you're unsure and we'll mark them as duplicates as appropriate.

Hi Andrew - How can I file the bug (component wise) so it would be publicly available to the user reporting it (so they can follow along if they choose)? I'll also note in the bug whether the user has consented to be contacted since their email address will appear in the bug too.

You don't need to do anything special, bugs are public by default.

Lily, do you have any more information from any other reporters?
I can't find any existing code that automatically opens the Mozilla privacy policy in a tab. There is code that opens the Firefox privacy policy in a tab, but that is supposed to only happen on the first run in a new profile.
A screenshot from an affected user as well as a copy of the data from about:support would be useful to make progress on this.

Hi Andrew - The user has consented to being contacted by engineering for additional information. Since I will be providing the user's email address, I need to file a new bug report that's under GDPR requests so the data is viewable to only those on the report. I will reference this bug report in the new one but please close this report.
