Thunderbird, open about dialog, click licensing information.

The header says: "Binaries of this product have been made available to you by the Mozilla Project under the Mozilla Public License."

Should this say "by the Thunderbird Project"?

The header can be easily customized, it's a thunderbird specific file here:
https://hg.mozilla.org/comm-central/file/tip/mail/base/content/overrides/app-license.html

As a reference, the seamonkey says "by the seamonkey project" as can be seen here:
https://hg.mozilla.org/comm-central/file/tip/suite/base/content/overrides/app-license.html

The same can be done for "about:Thunderbird" which reads "Thunderbird is designed by Mozilla". Although what to do about "a global community" may be slightly more complicated.

Maybe it should be the Mozilla Thunderbird project?
(I think the P isn't supposed to be capitalized, it's not part of the name)

It's not listed as a project on MoFo. I don't think we should perpetuate misconception by including Mozilla where it's not appropriate.

Let's just use what was proposed "made available by the Thunderbird Project" - As Wayne said, including any Mozilla stuff just makes it confusing.

  • As Wayne said, including any Mozilla stuff just makes it confusing.

and the "P" can be lowercase, I don't care much either way on that point.

I would argue "P" should be uppercase, because "Project" is part of a proper name/title of our community, i.e. project is not simply a descriptor. As an example, project is capitalized in the headline of https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/about/ (However there are a couple spots there where it isn't capitalized, but should be.)

To summarize:

Magnus wasn't sure about the "Mozilla" part, and Ryan and Wayne have stated to drop "Mozilla".

Wayne argued that uppercase "Project" makes sense, and Ryan is fine either way.

I think it means the text has been accepted by Ryan.

The only missing thing in the patch is that Magnus asked to use https.

Magnus wasn't sure about the "Mozilla" part, and Ryan and Wayne have stated to drop "Mozilla".

I haven't found a dedicated bug for the general naming issue, so I'll ask this here: Is the project still called "Mozilla Thunderbird", or just "Thunderbird"? Do we need to open a (tracking) bug for removing occurrences of "Mozilla" where appropriate from the source code, website, etc.? I am also asking this on behalf of downstream distributions, whose packages may need to be renamed (for example, from "MozillaThunderbird" to just "thunderbird" on openSUSE).

I suppose the project naming is slightly unclear, but the product name is clearly Mozilla Thunderbird.
