Steps to reproduce:

  1. Visit and bookmark http://firsttimeux.tumblr.com
  2. Visit and bookmark https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/
  3. Forget about http://firsttimeux.tumblr.com/
  4. Visit https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/ 1000 times (optional, I would think 20 times should be enough to illustrate the issue), closing the tab after each visit
  5. Type fi into address bar in new tab

What happens:

Firefox autofills to http://firsttimeux.tumblr.com

Expected result:

Firefox autofills to https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/

I have literally seen this for months and finally dug into it this weekend - I probably visited http://firsttimeux.tumblr.com once in the last few months, but have visited https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/ hundreds of times - but every time I visit, I type fi and press down and enter.

Given my understanding that Firefox's addressbar learns my habits, this is entirely unexpected. I'd prefer not to remove the bookmark that I rarely visit, and that Firefox should have learned after many months that I never visit that bookmark.

:yoasif, if you think that's a regression, then could you try to find a regression range in using for example mozregression?

I do not think this is a regression, or at least it has been an issue since at least Firefox 54.

Summary: autofill/suggestions seem to unexpectedly give unlimited frecency score when typed string appears in domain → Autofill suggestions seem to unexpectedly give unlimited frecency score when typed string appears in domain

Typing "fi" would never autofill to www.reddit.com/r/firefox/ because that URL doesn't start with "fi". You would need to type "www.reddit" or just "reddit" to trigger autofill for that domain and its URLs.

When you type "fi" even after forgetting about firsttimeux.tumblr.com, Firefox still autofills it because it's still bookmarked (according to your STR). That's a consequence of 1493636, which was a deliberate decision because that's what a lot of people wanted and expected. If you remove the bookmark, it should stop autofilling. If you visit/bookmark other domains that start with "fi" more often than firsttimeux.tumblr.com, then they should start autofilling instead.
