RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1540524

People

(Reporter: sam, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Fedora; Linux x86_64; rv:67.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/67.0

Steps to reproduce:

Create at least two separate Firefox profiles, and select the toggle in the Profile Selector Window to always ask on start-up which profile you'd like to use.

Then, when a 'Restart to Update' is presented and actioned by the user, the program quits out but doesn't automatically restart with either profile, nor does the profile prompt appear.

Actual results:

Firefox seemingly makes no attempt to restart. From the user's perspective it quits out but makes no effort to restart after.

Expected results:

Firefox should have either reloaded the current working profile and previous session, or alternatively have re-launched the profile selector.

Component: Untriaged → Startup and Profile System
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

Can you provide some more detailed steps to reproduce as I've been unable to do so.

Are you using two different installs of Firefox?
What state are the different instances in when you try to restart?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for getting back on this. I've got two profiles of Firefox running within Firefox's own profile manager (which you start with firefox -P). If I'm in one of the sessions and I update Firefox via the system package manager (Fedora in my case, so DNF), when I next try to browse anything a message comes up with the Dinosaur asking to restart Firefox. With a big blue button.

When I click to Restart Firefox, the session doesn't restart and only closes. I'm guessing it has something to do with how Firefox runs slightly differently when it has two saved profiles, perhaps it doesn't know which one to restart into? I can re-launch Firefox manually just fine, it's just the re-start functionality that seems impaired.

Unfortunately it'll be slightly difficult to replicate as I need a way of triggering that Restart message. Do you know of any special way to do that, because then I'd be able to film the screen or something similar for you.

Thanks again.
