Steps how to reproduce with Server Installation of unofficial (by wg9s) en-US SeaMonkey 2.53 (NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0 Build 20190709130007 (Default Classic Theme, German Language Pack active) on German WIN7 64bit:

  1. Launch Browser
» shows your default home page
  2. Click Location Bar right from contents → press <del< to delete all contents
  3. Into Location Bar type "https://qwertzuiop.de"
  4. <Enter> to open "https://qwertzuiop.de" (and probably get error code)
Expected: SM tries to open web page
    Actual: Nothing 😥

Additional info:
a) There is a very very small reaction at the Location bar: While I am typing a second
border line appears at the top and at the bottom of the input line. That one will
disappear in step 4
b) The problem seems to be not 100 % reproducible, in very few cases SM opens the
web page after <Enter> in step 4 for different URLs. More research required!
c) REGRESSION, not reproducible with installation of unofficial (by wg9s) en-US
SeaMonkey 2.53 (NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0
Build 20190329130005 (Default Classic Theme, German Language Pack active)
on German WIN7 64bit

d) https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem&remaction=run&namedcmd=DUPs1565819&sharer_id=41036&list_id=14801826 shows some similar reports, most from long ago, like
Bug 90337 - URL bar not responsive to the "Enter/Return" key (xbl bindings not loaded in time)

e) Seems to be some interaction between add-on or some User Profile contents and latest SeaMonkey.
Problem disappears in seldom used Test User profile. But reappears when having switched back to
normal User Profile
f) Problem also not reproducible in Safe mode.
f1) And strange: no longer reproducible after having restarted aftr tests (f) in normal mode.

Severity: normal → minor

Tried and can't reproduce. The website seems to have a https problem.

This is usually the case when a triggering principal is missing. Older add-ons might not provide them so if you have one which messes with the url bar or tabs try disabling it.

(In reply to Frank-Rainer Grahl (:frg) from comment #3)

Tried and can't reproduce. The website seems to have a https problem.

The reported problem also affects Internet Search via Location barsearch string.

I will try to associate an add-on to the problem later.

See also Bug 228303, though probably only of historical interest.
