Note that I have searched high and low for a report of this bug, the only reference I was able to dig up was https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/cbnesc/firefox_68_password_field_blinks/. I would pursue this bug on my own but I'm unfamiliar with the FF codebase currently and don't have the time to dedicate to it.
I am observing this as well.
It started a few (perhaps 7) days ago.
I am running Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS with all updates applied, 64-bit, with Firefox 68.0 (64-bit) from the system's repository.
I can confirm that launching Firefox with
GTK_IM_MODULE=xim firefox
makes the issue go away

I can confirm this as well. I also want to add that when this bug is "active" (a password field is selected), CPU usage of the Firefox binary goes up significantly.
Duplicate of bug 1565835. Also happens in gnome-flashback DE. Doesn't happen if you use the "Ubuntu" DE (whatever that is in the stock Ubuntu 18.04).
