I suspect that this is really a Java problem. You will need to register with the site to get to the crossword page, but registration is free. If you go to the above site and click on the link for Today's Crossword under the The Times Cryptic heading, a new page pops up containing a Java applet. However, with Mozilla the applet fails to initialize. The status bar says "Applet Grid notinited" and the java console contains the following error: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 13 at java.lang.String.charAt(Unknown Source) at Grid.init(Grid.java) at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Using IE6, the page works fine. I'm using Mozilla 1.0 (2002053012) and the Java Plugin version 1.3.1. Apologies if this turns out to be not relevant here.

what Ian said, reported, could you try with the latest JRE plugin from java.sun.com ?
Apologies for the delay. Unfortunately, the Times website have now started chargin g for access to the crosswords. As such, I have stopped using them, and am reluctant to pay up just to see if they work with 1.4, especially given that they may not! I may try emailing and asking if they can guarantee compatability though. Watch this space ...
