Details
I have an extensive list of bookmarks in my menu (in the OS X menu bar). When I attempt to scroll down the list, the menu takes control and will not stop scrolling down until it reaches the end of my bookmarks. This also occurs when scrolling the subfolders. This has been present in the last couple of nightlies.

Bug Confirmed Mozilla 20020711-08 Mac OS X 10.5 When the Bookmarks menu has too many to display on the screen, up and down arrows appear. When the down arrow is hovered over, the menu scrolls down to the bottom. The curser becomes the OS X 'waiting rainbow-wheel'. Clicking anything (including the up arrow) has no affect.

In Win32 (Windows 98SE) Mozill v1.1b this uncontrollable scrolling of the bookmarks 1st showed, to my knowledge, in the build of 8/2/02. Email me if you need to know the exact build # & I'll reinstall it. I get a new nightly build about once a week or so. In the build I got today, 8/12/02 #2002081209, I haven't yet seen the uncontollable scrolling but a new similar problem - it won't scroll hardly at all. You bring the mouse pointer to the bottom of the list & it scrolls 1 or 2 lines & stops. Jiggling the cursor up & down a little gets another line or 2 & stops. etc. You do need more than one screens worth of bookmarks to have this problem. BTW, the 8/10/02 build wouldn't install with a problem I find in about 1 of 4 Win32-sea.exe builds. It says corrupt *.xci (I think that is the name).

Same endless scrolling choosing Bookmarks from the Mozilla toolbar using Mac OS 9.2.1. Tried it using Classic and Pinball themes, no difference. Currently using Cmd-B as workaround. Doing search from there (Cmd-F) is much easier anyway, as I have a large 494KB bookmarks file, and menuscrolling is mighty slow when it's that long. Ditto for Mac OS 9.2.1. Mozilla 1.2a does not fix this problem of accessing a specific bookmark from the Personal Toolbar drop-down menu list. Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC; en-US; rv:1.2a) Gecko/20020910

Not sure if this is a dupe of bug 125375, but I commented there to get a status and to see if Ben was aware of this issue. It's a very longstanding issue on Linux, so changing OS/Plat. This is probably /the/ most annoying bug in Moz for me. See it on a daily basis, as I use the kb exclusively to access the bookmark menu. Also, when in this mode, even the mouse seems to have issues scrolling. It'll only scroll down two, then you have to move off the scroll arrow and back on for another two. It's a very long procesess.

I have observed this same problem with scrolling on the following release builds of Mozilla on Windows: 1.2, 1.3, 1.3.1, and 1.4. The behavior described is intermittent and not completely predictable or reproducable, so it is difficult to create a good test case. I maintain a large bookmarks file. So when I want to select a bookamrk from this file, I use the "Manage Bookmarks" option. My typical behavior is select "Manage Bookmarks" and then hit the "End" key to get to the end of the file and then rearrange some of the bookmarks. I will normallly select a bookmark with the mouse and then drag the bookmark up or down in the list and drop the bookmark to a new location, usually fairly close by. When I am dragging a bookmark up and go past the top bookmark showing in the window, intermittently the view of bookmarks in the "Manage Bookmarks" window will continously scroll smoothly upward for several minutes until the top of the bookmark list is reached. Once the scrolling starts, there is nothing that I can do to stop this behavior. There is obviously some place in the code that handles the "Manage Bookmarks" window where an endless loop is hit. Once the list of bookmarks starts to scroll upward, there is nothing that can be done but let it finish or close (and usually) crash Mozilla. I have only noticed this bug when dragging a bookmark upward. I have never observed this behavior when dragging downward, but this might reflect my typical usage patterns (move recently saved bookmarks upward to a new position in the list). My workaround has been to "cut" the bookmark from its current location and use the "Page Up" key repeatedly to position upward to where I want to place the bookmark and "paste" the bookmark into this new location. I have never observed this behavior using the "Page Up" key for navigation, so I general associate it with the mouse. Although it might be possible that scrolling upward with the "up arrow" key may also hit this bug. When dragging a bookmark upward, this bug appears to occur sometimes before the mouse appears to hit the top of the "Manage Bookmarks" window which would cause upward scrolling, but this may just be that with smooth scrolling the screen display is still refreshing and does not accurately reflect where the mouse is. Again, this bug is intermittent and will not happen every time which makes locating and fixing it a problem. I would do a careful code review of any loop structures that handle scrolling in the "Manage Bookmarks" window, particularly those that might deal with dragging bookmarks upward.

Using Firefox 1.0PR: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10 The scrolling through bookmark menu is horrible experience. I guess MS had the reasons when they did not implement mousewheel scrolling or simply mouse-cursor-position-based scrolling through bookmark menu, and allowed to use only scroll buttons. When I scroll to the very end and select an item, and then open bookmarks again, it starts scrolling while I drag mouse. If I use mouse scroll wheel in another direction, the current item starts jerking in the menu. Looks awful, and it is hard to stop that. This bug must be fixed, or those "simple users" who currently use MSIE, would not accept Firefox.

(In reply to comment #11) > Is this a duplicate of bug#129480? Seems like it is. Very annoying. There are several more annoying bugs related to bookmarks, like it is possible to create a folder, but impossible to delete it (possible to delete from "Manage Bookmarks" only); the same page can be bookmarked several times; this scrolling thing. Oh, and the main menu as a whole is slow as dead horse. Why is that? Does Firefox read main menu dynamically each time I select an item?
