User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0
Steps to reproduce:
Rename "Lightning" to "Thunderbird Calendar" or just "Calendar" (as perhaps it works with Seamonkey et. al)?
Using two names for the same thing confusing. Thunderbird should integrate Lightning add-on as the Thunderbird Calendar component, and forget Lightning.
Having the component called "Calendar" would enable it to be translated/localized. This is even more appropriate for non-Latin scripts.
Actual results:
It doesn't seem to make sense for people who are inside and outside the Thunderbird project and just want a Calendar module.
Especially since TB 38 Lightning's being shipped with Thunderbird on an "opt out" basis.
Expected results:
-
When a Calendar is required, use the "Calendar" component. There should be no reference to "Lightning".
-
"Calendar" should be localized, as there is no reference to "Lightning".
What do you think?
Thank you

For the integration into TB, we have bug 1493008. Is this a duplicate? Surely, once integrated, we'd drop the name of the add-on.

I'm not prepared to make this change without Philipp agreeing and a discussion somewhere more public than a bug.

I'm not sure I see the benefit of this for the user. If we decide to fully integrate Lightning into Thunderbird, then the string "Lightning" won't be visible to the user any more. Until then, it is still an add-on, so wherever the product name makes sense to show it should remain showing.
I'm inclined to close this bug until we've made a commitment to fully integrate Lightning, this would then just be one of the steps to make that happen. If you can highlight benefits this would bring beforehand, I'd reconsider.

I agree there doesn't seem to be much benefit in this.

When would the Lightning be fully integrated into Thunderbird?
Have tried to post on tb-planning, but our listings don't seems to be posted. The email is shown below:
To: Thunderbird planning (moderated) <tb-planning@mozilla.org>
Subject: Rename "Lightning" to "Calendar" (was ATN compatibility data for post-ESR60)
Is this is a more public place to to discuss [Bug 1570916] Rename "Lightning" to "Calendar"?

Thank you

I, for one, couldn't agree more. If people don't want to use calendar features, we should give them a way to shut it off. But let's make it a part of Thunderbird. The expectation of our users is that it will be there.

I think there is a simple solution. we integrate it not bundle it. Thunderbird is probably the only mail client still in development that has no calendar integrated as part of the application.
That is what we should do.
The current situation is not only bad for Linux users, but for Windows users as well. If I (for what ever reason) remove Lightning using the AddonManager, I cannot get it back using the AddOnManager. I have to do some magic with the advanced configuration. This cannot be right.
To improve UX:
- get the right version on ATN
- include it directly, not as addon

When would the Lightning be fully integrated into Thunderbird?
We don't know, it depends on some UI changes as well as backend changes to make sure that Lightning doesn't have an impact on Thunderbird for users that are not using calendars, as well as a few other things noted in bug 1493008.
Another point for this bug, before we've integrated Lightning completely, there will still be an ATN listing, which will have the name. I'm going to close this bug for now (INVALID for a lack of a better status LATER), please do bring this up again once we've fully integrated in case there are still references to Lightning left.
Thanks for the report!
