User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0

Steps to reproduce:

I use Thunderbird with a gmail account connected by IMAP in the recommended way. Since gmails concept of "archiving" merely involves removing the "inbox" tag (and gmails nonstandard "tag" concept is only clumsily mapped to IMAP folders), I have "Account Settings > Copies & Folders > Keep message archives in:" set to a custom IMAP folder.

This is in Thunderbird 60.8.0

Actual results:

Lately, when I try to archive emails from normal IMAP folders, they appear to be deleted from the folder (in gmail talk, the tag is removed), but they don't appear in my chosen archive folder (new tag doesn't appear). If I create a new folder, and set this as the destination (or choose the default "Archives" radio button under "Account Settings > Copies & Folders > Keep message archives in", it will work again, but I don't want to have to keep creating "Thunderbird Archived FULL FINAL LATEST VERSION V2" folders if this keeps happening.

How can I dig in further to understand what is (not) happening here?

Expected results:

The approach described above was working fine for a while--when I "archive" an email in Thunderbird, it is copied to the "Thunderbird Archived" folder on the IMAP account. I can later do a search in gmail for such emails and archive them there (not a perfect solution, but it was working for several months.)

It sounds like the issue might be gmail specific. If I understand you correctly you have a non-gmail account as well as the gmail one?

Ben, our Gmail support isn't very good. Another bug that just arrived, for example, bug 1571070. I guess it would be a good idea to create a "Gmail" meta bug and collect dependents. We've got improved Gmail support for TB 76 on the books, right, Magnus? Do you know of a Gmail meta bug, I couldn't see one. How is this best organised?

No, just the gmail account. I guess when I said “normal IMAP folders”, that might have confused things, since gmail tags aren’t really normal IMAP folders. What I meant by “normal” in that case was just “folders which are not my designated archive folder”, but there’s not really any other distinction.

Gmail meta bug 402793. The summary indicates imap specific, but it's got all manner of gmail issues linked to it.

My understanding is we ignore user changes to the archive folder settings for gmail accounts. I read it here in Bugzilla somewhere. Just as I would consider bug 1571070 invalid. If server side filtering places the message somewhere other that the inbox, there should be no expectation that it will still be there for a filter in a mail client to move it or process it in some other way.

Bug 533140 certainly indicates we ignore the changes to trash

My understanding is we ignore user changes to the archive folder settings for gmail accounts.

Is this perhaps a new change? And does that mean that I just should not expect the settings in Account Settings > Copies & Folders > Message Archives to apply consistently to this gmail IMAP account? Because, they do seem to work for a newly-created folder/tag, just not for my long-standing one for some reason.

Of course, what I'd really like is for the Archive action in Thunderbird to have the same effect as it does in the gmail interface (which appears to be simply the removal of the Inbox tag). This would require that Thunderbird recognize that seeming duplicate messages that appear to be in separate "folders" on the Thunderbird end are really just the same message, with different "tags" on the gmail end.

Ideally, there would also be a way to deal with the "Primary/Social/Promotions/..." categories that gmail allows for. As far as I know, these aren't exposed via IMAP, though they can be replicated by gmail filters that create matching IMAP tags. So, it would be a complete solution for me if I could have "saved searches", like "label:categ/Promotions AND label:Inbox" as well as actions like "Archive" that act on identical messages across multiple folders as one multiply-tagged message ... and this is sounding a lot like gmail's tag-based fake IMAP. Probably it could be achieved by some kind of an overlay add-on that changes how Thunderbird works in these multiple ways, and which wouldn't/shouldn't be installed by people with normal-IMAP providers.

This would amount to making Thunderbird (with this add-on) less a general-purpose email program, and more a gmail-specific client. I know this sounds a bit icky from a standars-and-software-purity POV, but then, considering gmail's dominance as an email service provider, it would probably still be immensely popular with users.

An update--as of this afternoon, archived messages are again popping up in my chosen archive folder after being deleted from their sorted folders. Not sure what changed. I guess it sounds like all of this should be rolled into that eventual intention to handle Gmail accounts more particularly, and probably this bug can be closed.

Whatever this was... -> WFM
