User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0

Steps to reproduce:

Thunderbird is started and running for 10 minutes.

Actual results:

After Thunderbird is running for 10 minutes, the computer becomes slow or sluggish. When I inspect Windows Task Manager, Thunderbird is hogging the cpu with between 10-30%.
This is when I am doing nothing in Thunderbird. Thunderbird should be idle.

Expected results:

No matter how long I wait, Thunderbird never stops executing heavily.
I cannot discover what Thunderbird is processing to do.
The problem is resolved only by stopping and re-starting Thunderbird.
My Thunderbird is on the latest level 60.8.0, 32 bit.

Computer, with Thunderbird problem, is running Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, version 6.1.7601 service pack 1 build 7601

This problem has existed since several levels of Thunderbird have been released.
I have been hoping that a new level of Thunderbird would fix the problem.

Please check tools > activity manager and tools > error console for recurring activity and errors.
Please start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled and Thunderbird in safe mode

If no change please run the performance profiler:

  1. Use Thunderbird 68 or newer - beta or current nightly build
  2. Install profiler add-on into thunderbird - get the add-on file from https://github.com/firefox-devtools/Gecko-Profiler-Addon/blob/master/gecko_profiler.xpi?raw=true and in Tools > add-ons click the gear to install add-on from file
  3. Follow instructions at https://profiler.firefox.com/ Also see videos based on Firefox, but applicable to Thunderbird.
  4. Create a profiler URL and post it here.

And backup your profile before testing.

Still needs information from reporter. Safe mode is the first step

Thank you to those making comments, endeavoring to help solve the issue.

First, I need to report that I bought a new laptop,
installed Thunderbird
and the problem of excessive cpu usage still occurs.

~ Based on the above suggestions
I examined my addons.
There are/were four extensions installed, but all four were indicated to be "disabled":
extra column folders, Lightning, LookOut, and Remember Mismatched Domains.
~ Nevertheless, I "removed" all four extensions.
~ I have no plugins.
~ I have no extensions.

The problem still occurs.

Next, still with no extensions or addons, I tried SAFE MODE;
regrettably, the excessive cpu problem still occurs.
At this moment, the usage is hovering between 9% and 12%

By way of reminder,

  1. The problem does not occur until Thunderbird has been running for at least 10 minutes.
  2. When the problem occurs, it persists even though I am doing nothing in Thunderbird:
    a. I am not sending email
    b. I am not drafting or editing a new email.
    c. There are no tabs open except "Inbox - Local Folders".
  3. I am running Windows 10 (new computer) fully updated and Thunderbird v60.8.0 (32-bit).
  4. The problem is resolved temporarily by stopping and restarting Thunderbird.
But within about 10 minutes, the problem is back.

I would greatly enjoy and appreciate a tip that leads to a solution.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Craig
