I am using
Mozilla 1.1a+
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1a+) Gecko/20020712
(Debian package)
Since the last upgrade (today), Mozilla does not find fonts other programs do
find. At the moment, it looks quite ugly.
Furthermore, in the fonts Mozilla finds, I cannot find any with umlauts.
If you look at the screenshots, you can see that especially the font Verdana is
missing, and others, too.

Are you using Truetype fonts?
If so: are you using the direct->FreeType2 access or the Xft->FreeType2 access?
(ie: did you follow this URL
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/fonts/unix/enabling_truetype.html
or did you get your moz from a Redhat rpm?)
To make this problem more manageable I would like to suggest we begin by
focusing on a particular font. Would you kindly point out a particular font
that you find missing?
The issue of the font selection dialog functionality is an entirely separate
problem and should be addressed in a separate bug (I must warn you that there
have been interminable discussions on its design with several individuals
ramming their opinions down everyone else's throats).

I am using Truetype fonts, and I am using a Debian build. So I will just contact
the maintainer of the Debian packages, probably he disabled Truetype support.
Sorry for bothering.,.

OK, I am sorry, the package maintainer did disable Truetype support:
mozilla-snapshot (0.0.20020714.04.trunk-1) unstable; urgency=low
* CVS update (trunk)
* applied Erich's gtk2 package diffs.
* --enable-xft, --disable-freetype2
* install pc file for pkgconfig (closes: #152541)
