Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.9; rv:66.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/66.0
Steps to reproduce:
Downloaded Firefox 67.0.dmg. Opened it. Copied Firefox.app to a temporary directory, renamed it to Firefox.67.0.0.app, and moved it to Applications. (I always do this so I can migrate to the new version at leisure, and go back to the old version if there is a problem with the new one.) Quit Firefox.66.0.5.app, closing roughly 19 windows with 190 tabs. Opened Firefox.67.0.0.app. One window with some splash screen opened, but not any of my previous session. Quit (or maybe Force Quit) Firefox.67.0.0 and opened Firefox66.0.5, and all my previous windows and tabs opened.
Actual results:
One window with some splash screen opened, but not any of my previous session.
Expected results:
All of my previous windows and tabs should have been restored.

- Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem. See
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1259936
and
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1260323
I haven't tried the suggested workarounds yet, but a bug is a bug. When I get around to trying the workarounds, I'll post the results (success or failure) here.
- I thought some Mozillan would have noticed and fixed this by the time Firefox68.0.0 came out, but it doesn't restore my Firefox66.0.5 session either. I have to stay on 66.0.5 until this is fixed. (It was bad enough when you broke Tab Groups. Fortunately, I had bookmarked my tab groups at one point, so was able to open each of those groups in its own window.)

It seems this is a feature, not a bug. See the discussion in
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1260323
and this article:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recover-user-data-missing-after-firefox-update
I will copy the tail end of my response from the support discussion here:
Oh, I see, you made things complicated for the average user in order to make things simple for the sophisticated user, perhaps to push Sync (I don't want my data in your cloud, thank you very much).
[Pause to read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recover-user-data-missing-after-firefox-update].
That seems to be the explanation. I will try that.
But you know, when you make a new profile for a new version of Firefox, it should contain the instructions for getting back the old profile. One shouldn't have to be put through these hoops (of having to create a Firefox account in order to ask a question in the Support forum).
I will repeat Chessin's Three Laws of System Design for your benefit (with apologies to the estate of Isaac Asimov):
First Law: Make life easy for the ultimate end user of the system (program, application, whatever).
Second Law: Make life easy for third parties who add value to the system (for example, ISVs), except where to do so would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law: Make life easy for our own developers, except where to do so would conflict with the First or Second Laws.
You seem to have violated the First Law.
