This comment suggests that the allowMetricsFromAAR option will pull both metrics.yaml and pings.yaml from the AAR, but the code suggests it's only metrics.yaml.
We should probably either update the comment or the code.

Gecko is currently our only consumer for this and it is not sending custom pings. Moving this to backlog.

I think we can now declare that we will not support custom pings in Project EXTRACT, so closing.
