From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC; en-US; rv:1.1a+) Gecko/20020715
BuildID: 2002021503 and 2002061103

If you wish to try this out, please e-mail me with a firm assurance that you
will destroy my log-in and password as soon as you have tried to reproduce this
bug; I will then send them to you.

I received an e-mail from Oxfam Urgent Action Mailing addressed to my old
Hotmail address: graubartmichael@hotmail.com. I opened it, and the message pane
was blank - and the headings seemed to be duplicated. Clicking 'Reply' or
'Forward' made the message appear, however.

In investigating this phenomenon, I then sent myself a short message (entitled
'Weird!'), and this opened perfectly correctly.

Finally I tried accessing my Hotmail inbox (a) via Netscape 4.79, and (b) via
Internet Explorer 5.1.5, and in both of these the Oxfam message (as well as my
own one) opened normally.

Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to www.hotmail.com
2. Use my log-in name and password (which I shall send you in return for an
assurance that you will destroy them as soon as you have tried this bug)to
access the inbox.
3. Open the inbox and click on the Oxfam Urgent Action message.
4. Click on 'Forward' or 'Reply'.
5. Go back to the inbox and click on 'Weird!'.

Actual Results: 3. The blue areas at the top of the window appear duplicated,
but the message is not there.
4. The message appears.
5. This message is displayed normally.

Expected Results: 3. The blue areas should not be duplicated, and the message
should appear.

Classic theme.

I tried this with both the builds of Mozilla listed above, with the same result.
I have never had this problem before when viewing Hotmail messages in Mozilla.
Get a newer build. 1.1alpha is very outdated. Try a nightly build.
This is a screen shot generated by the Mac OS.	'Information' describes its
type as 'Simple Text picture'.
This bug is still present in Build No. 2002071808.
Can you do a Save As... on the message and attach it?
Attached file Message (zipped)
This might be a Mac-specific bug, as I can't see it on Windows.
I saved the Hotmail message that would not display. If re-opened in Mozilla, it
again did not display. But if it was dragged onto the icon of Netscape 4.79 or
that of Internet Explorer 5, it opened and displayed correctly even though it
had originally been downloaded and 'Saved as…' in Mozilla.

The faulty displaying occurs with Mozilla 2002071808 and with Mozilla 2002072308
(both 'trunk' builds, both labelled 1.1b in 'Information').
Attachment #92529 - Attachment mime type: application/octet-stream → application/zip
The problem with the message attached as "Message (zipped)" comes on line 220, where they
include a string of hyphens inside an HTML comment. The HTML specification says comments
are delimited by "--", so that string of hypens repeatedly opens and closes the comment. (See
[http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/REC-html40-19980424/intro/sgmltut.html#idx-HTML].) There
are an odd number of "--" sequences, though, so ultimately they leave the comment open.

Thus this is Tech Evangelism. The e-mail author needs to repair their HTML. Though it may work
in some browsers, it's not syntactically correct and cannot be expected to work in standards-
conforming user agents.

There's a problem with Greg's assessment. Dash counting in comments is only
supposed to happen in Mozilla's Standards Mode. According to the bug attachment,
Hotmail is not using any Doctype (the page starts with "<html>") so it should be
in Quirks Mode, which allows dash runs inside comments.

Second, although I hate to speak up on behalf of a Microsoft affiliate, the
faulty dashes here are the fault of the email sender (Oxfam) rather than
Hotmail. I recommend contacting oxfam-e2-455332@ProcessRequest.com and/or
uam@oxfam.org.uk

does this only happen on MacOS or on other systems too? If yes, please set
Hardware and OS to ALL.
This bug is targeted at a Mac classic platform/OS, which is no longer supported
by mozilla.org. Please re-target it to another platform/OS if this bug applies
there as well or resolve this bug.

I will resolve this bug as WONTFIX in four weeks if no action has been taken.

Time to mark this WONTFIX

Sorry for bugmail spam, just trying to do my part to clean Bugzilla's database up.
Since Mozilla is no longer supported on Mac OS X pre-OS X I am attepting to test
the remaining open bugs (all 175 of them).

The test client will be the Mozilla (SeaMonkeys) 1.6 running Mac OS X 10.3.2

Result/Status: Should close per comment #13?
