Thunderbird 60.8 has a solid blue background for any checkmarks in Options using the hamburger button. Thunderbird 68.0 (build id 20190816191614) doesn't . It displays checkmarks for the menu bar, mail toolbar etc. using the same background as the rest of the window.
I don't know if this is incorrect, I'm merely reporting it because its different behavior and doesn't match what I see in tools -> options (which is similar to what Firefox does) . Its a minor cosmetic difference.
I'm testing using different profiles for each version. Both are using the default theme and don't have a chrome\userChrome.js

That came with the implementation of the new app menu. If you check FF, it has the same check marks.

Selecting Options using the hamburger button in Firefox 67.0.3 or 68.0.2 doesn't display a popup window like Thunderbird 68.0 does. It creates a Options tab (at least on the laptop I'm using) instead.
I can get that Options tab in Thunderbird 68.0 by selecting Options using the hamburger button and then selecting the Options menu item with a gear next to it.
If the goal was to implement the new app menu like Firefox does it should have displayed the initial popup window when you click on the hamburger button, and then used tabs when you select options, add-ons etc. Thunderbird 68.0 doesn't. It replaces the initial popup window with a Options popup window, a Add-ons popup window etc.

The checkmarks have the same background as FX. The Appmenu is no system widget and thus we use our own, non native, styling that looks on all platforms the same.
