STR:

  1. Visit www.google.com
  2. Search "wizard of oz"
  3. click the red shoes on the right of the page. This will do a spinning animation that is janky
  4. Click the tornado where the shoes were and the animation will reverse

Chrome is slightly better than Firefox. Safari does the animation with no issues.

I can also reproduce this on Windows with Firefox Developer Edition: https://perfht.ml/2HlpqV9

David, can you try enabling webrender, gfx.webrender.all?

When I enable it is nearly as fast as safari

https://perfht.ml/2ZzpMlo is the profile with webrender activated

OS: macOS → All
Hardware: x86_64 → All

A few more data points: for me and Denis, Firefox-with-WebRender (on Linux) is slightly worse than Chrome - we get a few Janky frames. But it's way better than no-webrender.

Should this be in graphics? Markus, do you have an advice?

Flags: needinfo?(mstange)

Sure, moving it to Graphics. The proper fix for this is enabling WebRender on as many platforms as we can, and improving the performance even with WebRender (bug 1577337).
