Details

(Keywords: regression)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0

Steps to reproduce:

There seems to be a regression in TB 68.0 from 60.8.0. The mail folders show the number of messages in brackets, and if a new message is received, it will be highlighted in blue. When going into that mailbox, and clicking on one of the new messages, the folder stays highlighted in blue.

Actual results:

The folders stays highlighted in blue, until selecting another folder.

Expected results:

After clicking on a new message, the folder should not be highlighted in blue anymore.

Ok, testing this more, one now seems to have to look at each new message, before the highlight is removed. I find it confusing, and liked the previous behavior better.

After using it for some hours, it really looks like a regression. The highlighting notifies the user, and when selecting one new messages, the notification is not needed anymore, and only distracts. If somebody wants to know, if they opened all new messages, they should find another solution.

At least on Windows, it's not that way. I folder with new messages is bold and blue. When you visit it, and read a new message, but not all new messages, it becomes black and bold. It loses the bold when all messages are read. That's the intended behaviour.

Is that not working on Linux?

I see this on Windows Daily too: send two messages together to the your account. The folder is blue. Now select the first new message, the folder stays blue. When selecting the second, the folder is no more blue (and no more bold).

Ah, well, I never noticed that. If I click onto another folder, blue turns to black. Some tree issue?

(In reply to Jorg K (GMT+2) from comment #5)

Some tree issue?

Maybe, it looks like the newMessages-true state isn't removed when you are already on the folder and a new message is selected.

Potentially the tree changes could have caused this, but hard to say.
I'm not completely convinced it's wrong though.

I almost doubt there is new behavior. I see the correct behavior come (even for very long periods) and go bad at times without version changes. Meaning there is something fundamentally broken that makes this intermittent.

If Paul or others still see this, then I totally retract my skepticism expressed in comment 9, now that I've reread the bug.

Summary: New message indicator in folder not updated → New message indicator in folder stays highlighted in blue, until selecting another folder.

I've been noticing this more, and it's indeed annoying.

Flags: needinfo?(pmenzel+bugzilla.mozilla.org)

At least in my case, with Debian sid/unstable and package thunderbird 78.14.0-1+b2, I noticed that due to ordering after the date, there are sometimes moderated mailing list messages, which get delivered later and are sorted further up. Due to having a lot of messages tagged as unread, I missed those. At least in the last days, finding these messages by only listing unread messages, the indicator turns from blue to black.

I have no idea, if that was actually it, but I am closing this issue.
