Peter,

As you using any system wide theme on your system?

Did this work before Thunderbird 68?

Benjamin,

Am not using any system wide theme on my system. Themes are as per user account(s).

Yes. It did work before Thunderbird 68. (As stated in my report.)

First we need to get the terminology right so we're all on the same page.

Looks like this is about tag colours and tagged messages. In the screenshot I see a tagged message. So what exactly is not working?

Can you post two small screenshots, one for TB 60 and one for TB 68 so we can see the difference.

Select a message in the Thread pane
Tag the message "Important" in the Thread pane.
Select the folder in the Folder pane that the message is in.

In 60.8.0 on Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS Linux, the bar across the message that was red after the message was tagged in the Thread pane, turns the color of the bar highlighting the folder. The message Subject and other information in the Thread pane remains red.
Select the message again and the whole bar is red again.

In TB 68.0 on Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS Linux, the tag bar color disappears when selecting the Folder the message is in, but again the tagged message Subject and other information remain red.

My system theme is Adwaita

I'm really confused here.

When a tagged message is selected in the thread pane/message list, it shows with a solid coloured background and either black or white text for good contrast. When the containing folder is selected in the folder pane and the message loses focus, it shows with a grey background and the text matches the tag colour.

So where's the problem? It works as designed. Apparently the background colour in the latter case has changed looking at Walt's pictures, but that better now showing the focus more clearly on the left.

Richard, can so see anything not working here? On Windows nothing has changed compared to TB 60.x which also shows a grey background in the latter case.

Summary: Set color code wont show in messages pane, shows only when select relevant message(s) → Tag colour won't show in messages pane, shows only when select relevant message(s)

This works here. Peter, could it be that a extension or a userChrome.css tweak interfere with the display? Have you tried the safe mode (see help menu)?

You seem to have a right hunch about this issue. When launching TB in Safe Mode the tagged colors appear and are clearly visible even if the relevant messages are not selected.

As soon as started in normal mode with extensions, the color tagged to the messages do not show. They show only when the relevant message(s) is/are selected.

You'd have to turn add-ons on and off one by one to find the culprit. I noticed that "Mailbox Alert" damages tag colours in my installation. I have already contacted its author. I also needed to correct my userChrome.css, but that's another issue.

I'll close the bug since it's add-on related.

Agree with your comment on terminology. Unluckily am not familiar with the original (English) terminology, such as tag color and tagged messages. Use the Finnish version of Thunderbird, and the terminology is quite different there.

I tried to add three screenshots as attachments, but was able to ad just one attachment. The original screenshots were named describing what the screenshot was about.

Will try to explain the differences between the three screenshots and wat is working and what is not working.

In the first screenshot (page 1) I have selected one tagged message, and it shows clearly (as long as the message is selected).

In the second screenshot (page 2) I have selected two tagged messages, and they shows color clearly (but just as long as the messages are selected). When relevant messages are not selected, the tagged color does not show in the message pane.

In the third screenshot (page 3) I have selected no tagged message (just selected an untagged message), and it shows clearly that the tagged messages do not stand out and show color.

By launching Thunderbird version 68 in Safe Mode (without extensions), Tb show the tagged messages with color, just as Thunderbird version 60.* used to do in normal mode.

With TB v 68 have the following extension installed and in use: Allow Htms Temp, Enigmail and Reminderfox.

Will test which extensions turned off one by one to find out which causes the unwanted behavior.

The culprit seemed to be ReminderFox. When turned off Thunderbird behaviour is normal and the tagged colors show as should.

Then please contact its author. I also use Enigmail and can confirm that it's not the culprit.

Whiteboard: [addon: ReminderFox]

Have emailed the author of ReminderFox extension reporting the issue with having that extension (version 2.1.6.6) in use with Thunderbird version 68.

Important to note Reminderfox is only supported up to TB vers. 60.x.
So any problem reported here should be tested without installing Reminderfox on TB68 ... or the hard answer: with TB68 don't install RmFX!

Yes. Noticed the support for Reminderfox with Thunderbird. Like the extension and wanted to give it a try anyway. Sorry for any inconvenience possibly caused.

Have now imported the Reminderfox.ics file into Lightning calendar. This way avoid to manually re-enter all to-dos that are already in ReminderFox again in Lightning. Have also taken ReminderFox out of use and even uninstalled it totally.

Thanks to all who participed in helping me get rid of the unlucky issue.
