This patch can be used to test whether PSM/NSS is able to shut down cleanly on exiting the application. It does so by changing the profile manager to drop the network connection on shutdown. If the shutdown does not work, the application will print => NSS SHUTDOWN FAILED on the console. (Not sure if that works on Windows, but on Linux and Mac, you can see the output in the console window.)
