found using 2002.07.18.05 nb. there are [currently] two tabs under Appearance: Colors & Links and Fonts. when you first open Appearance, the default tab should be the leftmost tab, Colors & Links. at the present the default tab is Fonts.

Confirmed using Chimera/20020718. However, I feel users are more likely to want to change font preferences than colors, so I suggest making the Font panel leftmost.
