User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/77.0.3865.90 Safari/537.36
Steps to reproduce:
1 - Seelect a newsgroup folder.
2 - Get Messages.
3 - Expand a thread.
4- Double-click a message to open (in my case option of in a separate window)
5 - Message opens, but the expanded thread collapses.
Actual results:
As above in '5', the expanded thread collapses (unwanted behaviour)
This behaviour started in 68.1.0 (?) and continues in 68.1.1 .
Expected results:
Message should open, and be marked as 'Read'. Expanded thread should stay expanded.

Hmm, I would have thought that news threading is just like the threading in any other context.
Here's a news folder from news.mozilla.org and I double clicked the three messages you can see read in the picture. Nothing collapsed.
Do you use any add-ons? Can you try with add-ons disabled, see Help menu. Can you attach a (small) screenshot. Also, does that happen if you open the message in a tab like I did.

Don't use TB for email - just USENET.

No add-ons. Tried also with add-ons disabled option selected - same.
If post open and thread re-expanded, arrowing down 'next' post does not collapse thread.

With opened message window left open (or closed) and collapsed thread is re-expanded, subsequently opened windows in that thread do not collapse it.
Problem only the first time per session of that newsgroup that for each thread that is expanded and a subsequent thread message opened, unless the first opened message is closed and re-opened - then thread collapses again. Move to another newsgroup then back to original newsgroup the problem resurfaces.
