Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:69.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/69.0

Steps to reproduce:

Install FF on new machine, sync to existing machine, existing machine settings overwritten by new machine, erasing all settings, history etc.
Forced existing browser to all default settings.

Actual results:

I got a new travel laptop and decided to install FF there and sync the settings from my main computer to the new laptop.

Sync decided that my newly installed browser's settings (which were all default) were more important and removed all of my open tabs, history, settings, etc from my everyday browser.

Expected results:

Sync should not have overwritten the settings, open tabs and history on my everyday browser.

Sync needs a Master option; the ability to set one browser as a master and alll syncing is done from that. The user should be able to decide at the end of each session on a non-master browser if the changes can be made to the master browser.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

I'm sorry you are having this issue. Did you reset your Firefox Account password as part of connecting the new laptop?

Flags: needinfo?(nukeiraq)

No. I did nothing out of the ordinary. Literally just downloaded FF to the new laptop and hooked up sync and blam, no more settings/history/extensions on my main computer.

:markh, could you have a look please?

I'm sorry you had this issue and I'm not sure what could have caused it. Sync doesn't have the concept of any one device being a "master" - it should always merge data and will not decide to delete data from devices simply because it doesn't exist on a different device. If you password was reset, and your older devices were yet to sync, then it could be explained why your new laptop didn't have all your existing data, but nothing can explain the data being deleted from older devices.

Obviously we see people installing Sync on new computers all the time and a bug like this would be immediately noticed by almost everyone.

I'm going to close this because it's not actionable, but if you can provide any further information (eg, if you would like to try and reproduce it on different computer, let us know because we can help you arrange for detailed logging on all of your devices) please feel free to reopen it, and again, sorry for this happening.
