Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:69.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/69.0

Steps to reproduce:

{I have reproduced this issue on multiple Win 7 machines, with differences in user settings, that said, this issue is -probably-
platform independant)

  1. go to any website where an (apparent) organization name
is displayed before the URL. e.g.:
    httpps://www.plumbingsupply.com
  2. make the browser window narrow enough that you can see
only "almost all" of the organization name. If the entire
name is displayed, the problem doesn't occur. If the window
is 'too narrow', then the name is truncated, and the problem
doesn't occur. It's a boundary condition. May be exacerbated
by the number of icons before the SSL padlock (on one machine
I have a number of features disabled -- access to
location/microphone/camera, etc. each of which causes an Icon
to be displayed at the beginning of the address bar.
If using the 'plumbingsupplly.com website. make the window
width such that "PlumbingSupply Group LLC (US" is displayed,
but indicator for the drop-down menu is entirely off screen.
When the entire name EXCEPT for the trailing ")" is visible one
is very close to the minimum width where the problem occurs.
  3. click anywhere on the address bar as a prelude to editing the
URL or entering a new one.
  4. attempt to type in a new URL

Actual results:

NOTHING. Apparently, the address bar doesn't get input focus.
and, therefore, one can't input anything into it.

If the browser window is wide enough that the separator between
the organization name (wherever it is that it is coming from, I
don't know, maybe "distinguished name" on the site 'certificate' )
and the URL is visible, and one can get the cursor I-beam to the right of that separator, one can input in the address bar .If you
cannot do that -- because that separator is past the right margin
of the display area, you're "dead in the water" as far as typing
a new URL o editing the existing one. Clickable links on the page
work, as do the back/forward buttons, you just can't do manual
URL operations.

Expected results:

typed input goes into the address bar, exactly as if the organization name was not there

Proposed solution -- limit the portion of the address-bar space that
the leading icons and the 'organization name' can use, at say something like 60% of the usable width. This guarantees that part of the URL will always be visible, and that one can then access the URL for edit purposes. standard treatment of the name text should apply -- if truncated, add trailing ellipsis, and, on mouse-over, show the full text.

  1. go to any website where an (apparent) organization name is displayed before the URL.

That's been removed in bug 1572936. Can you reproduce this issue in the latest beta?

Component: Untriaged → Address Bar
Flags: needinfo?(rgb0004)

This issue does -not- reproduce in latest beta.

In the specific circumstances cited, this was a real bug -- address bar was unusable. no way to
connect it to an 'enhancement' request where I had no idea what the 'thing' in the request was.

This bug report can be marked closed/resolved. I'm not sure I would call it a 'duplicate'. <wry grin>

per comment 2.
