RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 80392

People

(Reporter: ovvldc, Assigned: T.C.Witte)

Details

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; nl-NL; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530
BuildID: 2002053012

Some of the items in the preferences windows go too far right or down to be seen
once the Dutch language pack is installed. This makes properly configuring
Mozilla less than practical.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Switch Mozilla to the Dutch language pack and restart
2. Select 'voorkeuren' in the 'bewerken' menu
3. flip through the preference pages

Actual Results: Some items were clipped on the right side and I think some fell
off at the bottom (never sure, you can't see them)

Expected Results: Show everything perfectly

This bug has obvious crosslinks to Locatization but since it seems to happen
across different languages, fixing the size of the preferences window seems like
the answer (or having it calculate from the different prefs pages how big it
should be).

Related: bug 128239, bug 151599, bug 144688
Reporter: please attach a screenshot.
here's the deal, the dialog must fit in en-US on a 640x480 screen with a
menubar(macos) or taskbar(windows), as such the size must be fixed and
everything must fit in it. bug 80392 tracks this.

if your request is to make the size bigger by default i will happily resolve
this bug as a duplicate of a wontfix as specified by the module owner.

if your localization has extra problems ala japanese or german, there is a
localization copout which they may take. if you wish for them to take it please
indicate so and we will move this bug out of the browser product.

i'm inclined to resolve this bug as a duplicate of the pref dialog shrink
content to fit bug (bug 80392).

no. preferences are localizability friendly.

Well, thanks for the quick replies. Giving a screenshot seems rather useless
(other than that I have to get a tool for it first and don't have much time now.
It is like screenshot 90220 from bug 128239, only bigger. Navigator/History for
instance, just has buttons that get clipped at some point by the margins of the
prefs window. It is just nasty if you try to configure something and can't read
the right half of a paragraph.

Since the prefs window is fixed (and I suppose is now at maximum size), I think
Timeless' suggestion of giving it to the Dutch localization people is a good
one. I filed here because it seems to happen across different language packs,
leading me to believe there was an overarching problem in the prefs architecture.

By all means dup it to 80392 if the Dutch pack is already on the list there.

This problem of a wrong sized Preferences panel is hard to solve, because the
size is hard coded in the translation, and I cannot say beforehand how large the
panel should be. If I remember correctly, I first hard coded it differently than
in the original English version (to make it somewhat larger), but this didn't
solve the problem, because the panel wouldn't fit in the window anymore. Because
of that, I returned to the original setting.

There are no special difficulties in Dutch (like in Japanese), strings just tend
to be somewhat longer than in English.

I'll try to change the geometry so that the content fits better, but there's
only one real solution: automatic sizing of the window.

Ok, I've done that. In my development version (soon to be published), the
content fits in the window. The inconvenience of this 'solution' is that the
window itself doesn't always fit on the screen (depends on resolution, of course).
If I'm right, this could be a serious problem under Windows, because, if I
remember correctly, the window isn't sizable there.

Hoi Taco,

AFAICT, Timeless was adamant about the window size. Is there no way to use a
smaller font size or something that allows for the content to be sized down
rather than the window to be sized up?

http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html.

(In

Taco
