Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0 Waterfox/56.3
Steps to reproduce:
I tried to update Firefox on an older machine, in order to solve some accessibility problems.
Actual results:
I got the above message.
Expected results:
I can't find an archive of older versions, or a list of compatible versions for older systems, so I don't know if I can install a more recent version after 36, and add needed about:config settings such as ui.caretBlinkTime. I can't add them in FF 36.
If you're concerned that an archive wouldn't include needed security fixes, leaving people stuck doesn't help either.

I can't find an archive of older versions
The Installing an older version of Firefox support article has a link to the archive:
a list of compatible versions for older systems
Firefox version history Wikipedia article. I'd normally point you to the official Mozilla system requirements pages, but I just spotted incorrect requirements for Firefox 48, so it's actually not as good.
Automatically updated to FF 42.
If you're looking for the last version to support Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8:
