User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:70.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/70.0

Steps to reproduce:

Apologies if I've missed something obvious here.

For more advanced users who wish to have control over the data that Firefox sends back to Mozilla, they may disable the options to report technical/interaction data, as well as the option of installing/running studies directly from within the Preferences dialog. In my opinion, however, the one remaining option (Allow Firefox to send backlogged crash reports on my behalf) doesn't have a description documented anywhere as to what this option actually does. On a personal level, when seeing this the first time my immediate assumption was that upon each browser crash, these are logged by Firefox and then sent to Mozilla if the above box is checked; however, after further investigation this appears to not in fact be the case and for users who are looking to disable crash reporting entirely, this may not be clear.

Could we possibly consider documenting exactly what this option does - either on the Mozilla Support site, or within the Preferences dialog itself?

Actual results:

Gabriele, perhaps you can help here?

Flags: needinfo?(gsvelto)
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true

Having looked at the code again this does two things when checked:

  • If you've got some old unsent crashes it sends them automatically w/o user interaction
  • If a tab crashes it sends the crash report automatically w/o user interaction
Flags: needinfo?(gsvelto)
Severity: normal → S3
