Steps to reproduce:

After upgrade to MacOS Catalina 10.15.1

(FF 70.0, MacOS Catalina 10.15.1)

Actual results:

Got an alert in OS:
Keystroke Receiving
"Firefox" would like to receive keystrokes from any application.

Noting it says ANY application - not just the FF application.

Expected results:

I would think keystroke receiving would only be requested for the FF app, not from any app.

Thank you for filing this bug. Do you happen to remember if there was any particular action that lead to this dialog? There should no longer be a case in Firefox 70 that would display this dialog.

Did you change any preferences in about:config?
Were you on a particular website when this dialog popped up?

Would you be able to clear Firefox from the apps under System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Input Monitoring and see if this dialog shows up again?

Nope. Was on a fresh reboot of the laptop. And then I opened FF to run some DoH tests.

Did you change any preferences in about:config?

I made one change a couple weeks ago, adding a custom DoH resolver. This shows in network.trr.custom_uri and network.trr.custom as https://doh.xfinity.com/dns-query

Nope - just got the OS pop-up. I don't think FF was even running at the time but I am not 100% sure of that.

Yes! Just did so. Will advise again if it shows. Note that FF has auto-upgraded from 70.0 to 70.0.1.

Jason, one more question, (sorry for not asking earlier). Did you have any extensions installed? Opening about:support in the URL bar and collecting the information with the "Copy text to clipboard" button and attaching that to the bug would give us all that information.

Interesting extension results. Looking via the usual UI I see Bulk URL Opener and EasyDoH as enabled (both were used for DoH testing but I disabled them just now). But in about:support I see several extensions not exposed in the UI that I did not enable. Anyway, here you go below. I kinda suspect this is just another odd Catalina thing - like latency in the notification channel from the OS but who knows. I'm BTW totally fine if you want to close this given no apparent other reports of course. I can report again in case of recurrence.

Interesting extension results. Looking via the usual UI I see Bulk URL Opener and EasyDoH as enabled (both were used for DoH testing but I disabled them just now). But in about:support I see several extensions not exposed in the UI that I did not enable. Anyway, here you go below. I kinda suspect this is just another odd Catalina thing - like latency in the notification channel from the OS but who knows. I'm BTW totally fine if you want to close this given no apparent other reports of course. I can report again in case of recurrence.

Thanks, Jason. We'll keep the bug open for now and look into this some more. There may be another API we use that triggers this, but we haven't seen any other reports so far.

Regarding extensions, those extensions not exposed in the UI are built-in extensions we use to implement the search providers available by default in Firefox. Of the two other extensions you have installed, they should not be able to cause the dialog. (There are some extensions that require you to install a helper application locally and they could trigger this dialog, but that's not the case here. That's something we've fixed in Nightly and will make it's way to release. I wanted to check if you have any of those type.)

One other remote possibility that might fit your scenario because you mentioned Firefox might not have been opened at the time: if after rebooting, you ran an old unfixed version of Firefox (even briefly) that triggered the dialog and the dialog was never dismissed, it will stay in the background forever (until reboot or its dismissed.) Then later when quitting applications or moving windows, the dialog could become visible.
