<select size="1"> is wider. and there is a margin before its left edge.

Tuen off XBL, all of them almost have the same width.

The attachment contains a script that shrinks the list from size=5 to size=1. 
When the list has size=1, it should be a standard drop-down list that expands
when you click it.  Instead, it becomes a scrolling list in which only one
option at a time is visible.
