Currently, IE is my default browser. I have done what is necessary to cause Mozilla to query me on its startup whether I want to make Mozilla the default browser. I press the Yes button, and then Mozilla freezes/hangs. When I push Control-Alt-Del, I see that Mozilla is not responding. Therefore, I have to End Task, of course, causing Mozilla to close. The only way I can get to use Mozilla after I am asked if I want to make it the Default Browser is to press Cancel. Currently, I cannot get Mozilla to be the Default Browser.
Reporter: could you please read the Bug Writing Guidelines at http://www.mozilla.org/quality/bug-writing-guidelines.html to see the kinds of information we need in a bug report. Please report back with more information (like BuildID and steps to reproduce) after reading those guidelines and consider using the Bugzilla Helper to report future bugs. The Helper can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/quality/help/bug-form.html Unfortunately, we were unable to reproduce this behavior of Mozilla. Although, some details in your bug report gave us a hint that it may be related to the fact that newer builds of Mozilla may incorrectly understand the configuration information of the previous builds. We would really appreciate if you try a clean install of recent Mozilla version that you can obtain at: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/ "Clean install" means that Mozilla should be uninstalled and its home directory (usually located at C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla in Windows based systems) should be erased manually along with its contents. After doing that, please install Mozilla again and try reproducing the bug again. Thank you!

Ever confirmed: true
I have just encountered this problem with the released v1.1 of Mozilla. I had Mozilla 1.1a installed and never got the quesiton asked about making it default. After uninstalling 1.1a and installing 1.1, I got the question and ended up hanging mozilla. I uninstalled 1.1, wiped the Mozilla install directory and the profile directory and reinstalled and still had the same problem. I am administrator on the system. OS: Windows 2000 Professional with service pack 2 Mem: 256MB HD Space: Plenty The make default for mail reading also results in a lockup of Mozilla. clicking No or Cancel results in Mozilla continuing to run. I do use quick launch, disabling quick launch did not affect it though.
I also get this behavior using Mozilla 1.1 This is a fresh install on a new box. OS: Windows 2000 Professional with service pack 2, just like the last guy. I also get the hanging behavior if I go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> System, and just hit OK without making any changes to the default settings (Default settings are: All file types checked except for BMP and ICO; all protocols checked).
From personal mail: From: <rogerdavis@earthlink.net> > I haven't had time to follow the full list you gave, but I do have some > additional info: > 1) Netscape 7 has the same problem > 2) By any chance, do all the people with this problem have Macaffee? Is > WebScanX an active process on their machines? Original Message:
I do have McAfee and WebScanX is in the background. When I checked Mozilla, it was somehow set as the default browser which seemed strange as I had disabled the testing of it being default so it would stop asking. I had IE override what is the default and checked Mozilla which then said it was not default (completely closing Mozilla including the quick launch). Telling Mozilla to be the default did not lock up. The change? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I have not applied any patches, I have only rebooted quite a few times but I tried rebooting before which did not solve the issue. I do not know what caused it to hang nor can I re-cause it to hang.
