Hi Bob, are you running any Firefox extensions? Thanks!

Flags: needinfo?(morganbob)

Running following extensions: (now on FF 73.0)
Adblock Plus
Cisco Webex Extension
IBM Security Rapport
Reader
Theme Font & Size Changer
Would you like me disable all but Rapport to see if problem goes away?

Hey Bob,

Yeah, it's worth trying without extensions just in case, but it's just a guess that, that's the issue. Good to rule it out though.

Also, I wonder if you wouldn't mind clarifying one bit in your steps to reproduce, what did you mean by "hover over icon produces URL in lower left of window, but clicking icon has no effect", which icon are you hovering over, is it all links that don't work, does that include topsites, stories, and highlights, or is it just topsites, etc?

Just now got the most basic failure. Clicked + to open a new tab and it was immediately dead. Putting anything in FF search box produced nothing, as well as the search box for Google which is my home page. I'll leave this FF window open for awhile in case you want me to try something. Other tabs and the one created from clicking on your email all are working normally. Any additional clicking + on this window creates dead tabs. Creating an additional FF window creates new tabs OK.

Priority: -- → P3

Just putting myself here as a reminder to dig into this more.

I'm starting to wonder, by looking at the initial steps to test closer, if this is maybe in the wrong component.

the new tab component is for the webpage that displays when you click the new tab icon.

This parts that make me think this are:

"hover over icon produces URL in lower left of window, but clicking icon has no effect." and
"Clicked + to open a new tab and it was immediately dead. Putting anything in FF search box produced nothing,"

This makes me think there is an issue in the tab loading. I'm not sure if that's the newtab component. I'll try it in tabbed browser, in the hopes in can get properly triaged.

The last time I had this failure was 12Feb. I updated to 73.0.1 on 18Feb so maybe that fixed the problem. I suggest you don't spend any more time on this unless it re-occurs for me or some else. I can't deliberately reproduce the problem so it's doubtful you could.

I'm a retired software developer of 40 years so I still get a kick out of helping solve complex problems. I've worked with Apple to correct an intermittent iPhone Accessibility issue. They downloaded special capture software so I could initiate a state capture when the problem occurred.

Once a dead tab opens in a window, all additional tab openings are also dead. That means the whatever causes the problem is still in memory and likely could be captured. If I again encounter the problem is there anything I could do to get a dump or anything else? Would giving remote access to my mac while the failing FF instance is still active be of help?

This should be CLOSED. Problem has not occurred for 3 months. FF 73.0.1 was most likely the fix.

Severity: normal → S3
