160033 - Mail gets marked as read after a few seconds

Select an e-mail in the Inbox or in a folder, after a few seconds it loses it's
green diamond and becomes marked as read.
I haven't read it yet!
I would like to mark it read, if and when I get around to reading it.
Perhaps this option exists but I couldn't find it in the help.

Is the message pane (bottom right pane) open? If so, selecting the message in
the thread pane (upper right pane) causes the message to be downloaded and
thereby marked as read.  If you don't want to open messages on select, there are
two options for you: 1)  use a single right-click to select 2) Close the message
pane by either clicking on the gripper to snap it shut or uncheck menu item
View|Show/Hide|Message Pane and then you can open messages which you want to
read to a standalone window via double-click, Enter or context menu item.

Yes, the message pane is open. I like the message pane.

Frankly, this is a critical feature for me.

In Outlook Express, in the Tools->Options Read tab, you can designate whether 
you want messages to be automatically marked as "read" or not. And even if you 
do, you can specify how long it takes.

In Mozilla, if I use the up and down arrows to move the selection in the thread 
pane, and I linger over a message for a second, then it gets marked as read, 
but I haven't read it yet. I haven't even looked at it yet; I simply moved the 
selection past that message.
