User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:71.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/71.0

Steps to reproduce:

When I click on the Dismiss option on the Top Sites in the New Tab page, the website gets replaced with another instance of itself.
I have to click "Dismiss" multiple times to make the website disappear from "Top Sites".

Actual results:

The "Dismiss" option removes one instance of the website on the "Top Sites". This is fine. But the repetition is not.

Expected results:

A separate "Dismiss Website or Dismiss Completely" option below "Dismiss" that removes the website and all of its instances from the Top Sites. This will remove the need to click "Dismiss" multiple times.

Component: Untriaged → New Tab Page

Thanks for reporting!

Current system does not have sophisticated grouping of subdomains. This would need to be solved with improvements on logic.

Gavin, can you find us the current rules?

"Dismiss" does seem to dismiss on a URL specific basis, not per domain or subdomain.

If we want to dismiss whole categories of URLs (eg: by all URLs under a specific domain and/or related subdomains) then that would be a new feature entirely. UX/product would need to provide guidance on what the rules of that action should be exactly. For example, does "Dismiss Entire Domain" run on a google.com based URL dismiss URLs on mail.google.com as well?

I believe we'd also want to give users a way to manage their dismissal patterns in case you accidentally dismiss a domain group and want to unblock it. Either that or only existing history is filtered out and moving forward a new matching domain would be allowed.

It would indeed be a good feature as it could also prevent to have multiple instances of virtually the same sites in Top Sites, and Highlights, too. And I can confirm it's totally annoying of removing the same or almost the same site over and over again (e.g. from a blog when only the last figures from a date or similar are different).

This should have been fixed before the megabar update. Megabar shows all top sites as a drop down which is different from Safari (Safari only shows favourites). But the "Top Sites" feature is poorly designed. It aggressively adds multiple subdomains of websites into top sites which cannot be removed in one go (which Safari doesn't). This has become a critical UI bug now. Please fix this ASAP.

I just found out that the megabar dropdown shows only the first eight "Top Sites", so it could be solved by pinning those. However, this bug may still be relevant but it is no longer too problematic.

+1 (currently on FFv77/Win10v2004)
I'd previously been using an Addon called NewTabTools as my start page, but when this revamped newtab page came out I found it "good enough" to not bother with yet another addon, however, I think newtab can benefit some enhancements, including this feature.
I'm only using the Top Sites feature of newtab, showing 8x6 tiles (I probably bumped them up in about:config).

"Dismiss Entire Domain" run on a google.com should dismiss all of http[s]\\*.google.com\* and http[s]\\google.com\*
An additional "Dismiss Entire Subdomain" would be necessary for more control.

I believe we'd also want to give users a way to manage their dismissal patterns in case you accidentally dismiss a domain group and want to unblock it. Either that or only existing history is filtered out and moving forward a new matching domain would be allowed.

Agree! Perhaps a "~Manage Dismissed Sites" dialog where you could modify the URLs of the dismissed, toggling Site/Subdomain/Domain.

With the new redesign for homepage coming, this bug may be worth considering.
