I don't quite understand the bug being described here, but the mention of "collapsy(e?)" sounds like a problem I have with the Quick Filter bar. Could the Quick Filter bar be made more persistent? If I'm repeatedly hitting escape to chase away a tree of pop-up/context menus, one escape too many will also close the Quick Filter bar. Apart from transient items such as context menus, the Quick Filter seems to be the only toolbar that also closes on escape being hit.
