Details

If I have a bookmark and schedule it to notify me of changes by changing the
bookmark's icon nothing ever happens, i.e. the bookmark's icon never changes
(either in the bookmark window or in the bookmark menu in the browser window). 
However, if I also choose to 'display an alert' I will get the alert to popup
notifying me the bookmark has changed.
