Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:72.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/72.0

Steps to reproduce:

Update Firefox (menu lang setting: de) on elementaryOS 5/ubuntu 18.04 via eOS AppCenter, restart Firefox (other reason)

This is related to Bug 1441135 but the lang pack is still valid, no need to update lang pack (add-on properly loaded and usable)

Actual results:

UI language switched to default (English) instead of (still selected and loaded valid) German langpack. After switching back and forth to de and restarting Firefox the language is restored properly (no new load need = langpack still valid for new FF version)

Expected results:

Use selected (and loaded valid) langpack after update

In all previous bugs there was always a notion of "updating a langpack" but in my report the existing langpack preference is ignored even without touching any langpack WHILE the currently loaded and select custom langpack is actually valid (otherwise switching back and forth would result in an outdated langpack version).

The preference is simply ignored when the new ff version is installed (even though the list of custom langpacks is retained). The installer shouldn't just use with the default langpack but consider the custom setting. This may result in an invalid langpack after the update but that's OK.

Did you update from 72.0 to 72.0.1? If it was an update from a previous major version, then the language pack does need to be updated manually.

The UI language falling back to en-US on updates is quite common, unfortunately.

Sounds like this. Do you know what this is actually a duplicate of?

I'm confused, I thought I was answering in a completely unrelated bug. Why are you quoting a comment from a different bug?

For this specific bug: according to the reporter, the language pack is still enabled in about:addons, but UI falls back to en-US.

  1. What's the language of Ubuntu?
  2. Can you copy and paste the international settings table at the bottom of about:support?

I noticed it since several version updates, nit just the recent one.

That's the bug I was trying to report. Falling back = ignoring settings (without reason)

This is current situation, but I assume your browser is correctly in German at this point? This is seems correct: German is available, and it's the requested language.

It would be important to check these values when the problem occurs, together with verifying that the language pack is indeed active in about:addons.

I think this is blocked until we can get the about:support info when the issue is still occurring. If this happens again Stefan can you provide the state from about:support?

Surely, do you know when the next FF release is planned? Currently I am on canoncila/ubuntu 72.0.2

Looks like 73 should release around Feb 11.

Based on comment 5, looks more like a preferences bug than addons manager.

Component: Add-ons Manager → Preferences
Product: Toolkit → Firefox

Firefox 73 has now been released. Can you reproduce this now?

Flags: needinfo?(stefanehaas)

Not the right test. about:addon tells that the DE LangPack is incompatible with FF 73.0 and disabled it. I'll try on next sub-release (73.0.1)

No, this is an issue with locale negotiation, per that same comment and comment #0 - the prefs are correct, the add-on is installed, but the wrong messages are being loaded in the UI.

How about 73.0.1?

Now works as expected after FF update from 73.0 to 73.0.1 today (langpack was also updated)
