Is this only at startup? When you do Go > Mail Start Page? Or both?
What new error appears in Error Console (ctrl+shift+J) when you reactivate dictionary and go start page?
In my attempt to resolve, I re-downloaded Thunderbird and launched the .exe file. Now the dictionary is gone from add-ons and the start page doesn't work ever. It's not the new software revision. The Thunderbird program on this computer is hosed. I don't have the problem on my other laptop. I thought re-downloading would overwrite any bug. That doesn't work. Is there any way to re-generate the base program without losing my email and calender?
Spell checker no longer works as well although it's checked in options.
When I restart Thunderbird in safe mode, close that and restart normally the Start Page works, but only one time. I can then close Thunderbird, reopen it and the Start Page is blank again. Twilight zone.

And (repeating) when it doesn't work, what error(s) appears in Error Console (ctrl+shift+J)

Ok, what language version of Thunderbird is installed? I assume not en_us given you have an addon for the dictionary.
How is the dictionary being installed? I see no way in Options > Composition > Spelling to disable a dictionary, only to add one.
The dictionaries tab in the addon manager does allow ditionaries to be Disabled, but I see no link between loading the stat page (which does not load for me anyway) and a dictionary.

I installed en_us because the spellchecker stopped working 6 months ago without it. The bottom line is the profile software is hosed. If there is no way to rebuild that without starting from scratch then I guess I'll live with it. What I'm sure would fix it is a complete deletion and re-installation of Thunderbird including the profile. I'll do that when I re-image my laptop. I'm going to put a SST drive in. Thanks for your responses and help.
