Could there have been a hidden space there??

No problem here creating my IMAP account with "@gmail.com", in a test profile using the Ubuntu supplied Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/68.4.1 on Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS.

That said my account has POP disabled.
Do you want me to test something?
Works here with the standard account addition (68.4.2 32b/W10). Can the OP reproduce the result with an English version of TB?

Yes, of course, I saw the non-English in the OAuth browser window. But the failure occurred before that in the setup window. Maybe the length of the password is a factor.
